We take delivery of our first VW Transporter 6.1
The new VW Transporter T6.1 has landed, and we have already started the conversion process with a big customer build. The new model has upgraded technology and a new-look dashboard and front end.
With more than 70 years of history and a production run exceeding 12 million, the Volkswagen Transporter is a true icon of the automotive world. Through six generations, the Transporter has never wavered from its ‘form follows function’ design philosophy and continues to set the benchmark for quality, refinement and practicality.
As the Transporter enters a new decade, Volkswagen is introducing a substantial engineering and design update that will make it one of the most advanced vehicles in its sector. Like all new Volkswagens, the new Transporter 6.1 is a fully connected vehicle packed with a host of new technologies designed to make life on the road safer, simpler and more enjoyable for drivers and owners.
Among the many new features introduced on the T6.1 is a completely redesigned instrument panel that features a fully configurable Digital Cockpit. This is linked to third-generation MIB infotainment systems to form a new digital framework. At the heart of this new and highly advanced system is an online connectivity unit (OCU) that houses an eSIM that provides ‘always on’ connectivity. This opens up a new range of online-based functions and services via We Connect, including eCall, breakdown call, vehicle health report and driving data plus parking position. We Connect Plus adds a host of other functions including online anti-theft alarm and speed alerts, ‘Beep and Flash’, Lock and Unlock, online route planning, info on filling stations and car parks, online voice control (just say ‘Hello Volkswagen’ and ask away!), web radio and media streaming.

The reconfigured interior also features a host of new ergonomic improvements, including additional shelves, storage areas and cup-holders. Even the air vents have been reworked and can now be adjusted in every direction and simultaneously opened or closed using one slider control. The steering wheels have also been redesigned. On the new multifunction steering wheel there is now a View button, which enables the driver to switch between the Digital Cockpit’s different display configurations with just one click.
Powering the T6.1 is a range of efficient and refined diesel engines
with power outputs ranging from 90 PS to 199 PS. Seven-speed DSG gearboxes are available on selected models, as is 4MOTION four-wheel drive. All Transporter 6.1 TDI engines fulfil the latest Euro 6d TEMP EVAP emissions standard. Another first for the Transporter 6.1 is the fitment of electro- mechanical power steering. Unlike the hydraulic system it replaces, the new steering system can be controlled electronically as needed and thus reduces fuel consumption. The move to an electro-mechanical design also allows for the introduction of a range of new driver assistance systems including Lane Assist, Park Assist and Trailer Assist. To use the latter, the driver uses the rotary knob of the electrical wing mirror adjustment system as a joystick. Using the display on the dashboard, the driver simply sets the angle at which the trailer needs to be reversed and the Transporter takes care of the rest.
